Oh, I never get tagged on these! Thanks @princess-viola for tagging me :>

*Last Song Listened To*: December by Collective Soul. A comfort song of
mine.

*Currently Reading:* Mentioned this on another post recently, but I’m
re-reading Amazing Spider-Man from the beginning. Been a long time since
I’ve sat down and read the early stuff, and there’s some that I’ve never
read. I’ll probably take a break after a while to go back to working though
my backlog of queer graphic novels.

*Sweet/savory/spicy:* Savory, I suppose. Sweet is a very close second
though. Spice I’m okay with but I can’t handle very much ^^;

*Obsession:* Bionicle (obv), Transformers (probably also obv?), comics,
fiddling with tech. There are plenty of others but it would take a while to
list them all.

*Relationship Status:* Married for 7 years!

*Last Thing I googled: *David Tennant’s age. It was relevant to a
conversation I was having with my wife, I swear

*Currently working on:* I guess this is supposed to be creative projects,
so I shouldn’t just put “surviving.” I recently finished my first
Transformers custom in a while, and will hopefully be able to post some
photos of it publicly soon. I also recently finished making my new personal
website! But as for stuff I’m *currently* working on, mostly just
continuing to hammer away at my next video essay and some small
improvements for my Bionicle website and YouTube channel (Cross-Wired
Geeks).

**Tagging*: I have far too much social anxiety to tag 9 people on here, so
I guess I’ll continue with 3: @holdenmademeangsty @eternalroo76 @emilyzone

Biological Chronicle – The Final Update

Happy 810NICLE Day, everyone!

Today, I’m announcing what will be the final update to the Biological
Chronicle project – in particular, fulfilling some promises that I made 2
years ago.

First off, though: a number of months ago, it came to my attention that the
method I had used to extract the digital copies of the comics was…
imperfect. Back when I first started this project in 2017, I used a Chrome
extension for backing up Comixology comics, which was far from an ideal
method, but I didn’t have (or know of) any better options at the time. What
I discovered sometime last year was that I could actually extract the image
files directly from the comics, meaning that my digital comic rips would be
the highest-resolution possible copies of the official digital releases.
Despite my statement 2 years ago that I wouldn’t be doing anymore major
content updates, I felt I had to make an exception for something like this.
So today, I’m happy to announce that all comics in Biological Chronicle
that were originally sourced digitally (i.e. I didn’t manually scan in
physical copies) have now been updated to higher-res versions. As part of
this, any edits/fixes that had been made to them previously had to be
re-done (thanks so much to Chip Wiseman for her help with that!), which may
result in some small, negligible differences on certain pages from what was
present before. Here are some comparisons so you can see the improvement in
image quality:
*OLD* *NEW* *OLD* *NEW* *OLD* *NEW*

(note: these higher-res comic rips are not yet implemented in the web
version, but will be soon! For now, please enjoy them in the various
downloadable versions)

Now, let’s talk about those promises I made so long ago. First off: all
versions of all 10 volumes of Biological Chronicle are now available in
EPUB, MOBI, and AZW3 ebook formats! These ebooks have tables of contents,
image alt text, and, just like the PDFs, are available with or without
things like comics and media links (which may or may not be desirable
features depending on the device you’re using). The fonts used for
Biological Chronicle are embedded in the ebook files, but you can still use
your e-reader’s font settings to change those fonts if you prefer something
else. Note: the MOBI files are dual-packed “old MOBIs” and “new MOBIs” (aka
KF8s) – so if you are using an older device that only supports the old MOBI
format, you will not see the nice fonts and some of the formatting, due to
technical limitations of the format. This should only apply to particularly
old e-reader devices, though.

Next, the thing I’ve been wanting to do since first starting this project:
for every version of every Book, there is now a copy available that’s
formatted with printing in mind (for taking to a printing press service).
That means things like page gutters, space around images for trim, moving
the QR codes to the left side for even-numbered pages, extra pages inserted
where needed to make 2-page spreads align properly, and many more small
formatting changes. I chose a 6×9 format, since it seems to be commonly
available at different printing presses, and strikes a decent balance
between ease of holding/carrying and readability for things like comic
pages. I’ve also provided dust jacket files for all 10 Books, as well as
the PSD I used to create them. I formatted the Books and dust jackets
specifically for Barnes and Noble’s Press service, but with the files
available for download here, you should be able to tweak anything you need
to in order to make them work with the printing press of your choice.

And before I go, I do have one more thing to announce – something that many
people have asked me for over the years, for various reasons. *I am making
the original Word docs that I use to export the Biological Chronicle PDFs
available for anyone to download.* This is something that I’ve been very
hesitant to do, as the idea of anyone being able to do whatever they want
with this project that I’ve worked so hard to create, is… a little
nerve-wracking, to be honest. But I want this project to be a resource for
the community, and since I’m now moving on from it, I think the best way to
ensure that people can still get whatever versions they want, with whatever
changes they desire, is to release the docs for everyone to access.

I want to say a huge thanks to everyone who’s supported this project,
provided feedback, shared it with friends, and more. It’s become more than
I ever imagined it would back when I started it, and I’m proud of what I’ve
been able to accomplish with all of your help. I hope that Biological
Chronicle continues to be of value to the community, and that people
continue to use it to introduce their friends to this franchise that we all
know and love.

Now, me turning the page on Biological Chronicle doesn’t mean that I’m
stepping away from the community entirely. On the contrary, I hope that
with this project finally completed, I can revisit some other creative
pursuits of mine that I’ve left behind for a while… so for fans of a
certain video essay of mine from some years back, maybe keep an eye on the
Cross-Wired Geeks YouTube channel in the future ;>

Happy 810NICLE Day, and goodbye – for now!

New MOC: Wynn’s new look!

As my transition has proceeded, I’ve felt less and less comfortable with my
old self-MOC as a representation of myself. This year, I finally got around
to building a new and improved one, taking design cues from the previous
MOC but with shapes and colors that I prefer for myself. Introducing: the
new and improved Toa Wynn!

I wanted something that was clearly an update of the previous MOC, so I
started with the same base for the torso, and used similar shapes for the
arms/shoulders (just with different scaling). The legs were a bit trickier,
as I didn’t like the old shaping at all – so I essentially flipped the legs
upside-down, having the Mata feet as the calves instead of the thighs, and
the Inika armor as the thighs instead of the calves, and figured out the
exact shaping/scaling from there.

The color change is something I decided on far before I actually began
working on the MOC. Purple has been my favorite color for a long time, but
I hadn’t quite realized that until a few years ago. I went with green on my
previous self-MOC in order to use a Kualsi on it (I thought gold would look
a bit pretentious), but these days I know much more about the world of
painting and casting masks, so I knew a purple Kualsi would be possible. I
actually tried commissioning a purple resin cast Kualsi for the new MOC,
but unfortunately wasn’t able to make it happen – so I had to paint it
myself. It took a few attempts (I’m still very new to using an airbrush,
and I was working with a different brand of paint than usual to get the
right color), but I’m decently pleased with how it turned out.

I kept the same Toa tool (a bo staff) because I still really like it! I’m a
big fan of giving my MOCs various types of polearms, and I always like to
build the handles in the same way I did on this MOC – I like the texture of
it, it makes it easier for MOCs with articulated fingers to hold, and I
think it gives my creations a distinctive identifier that they’re my work.

For anyone curious, this MOC is absolutely still a Toa of Earth, just like
the previous one. I’m not “retconning” the previous MOC – just showing the
next step in their life (mirroring my own). I’m not too bothered about the
specifics of the changes – she rebuilt herself, I suppose – but suffice to
say that she looked like the old MOC before, and she looks like this now.

I think that’s really all I have to say about this MOC, so – bye for now!

Another little thing I've been working on recently: a grappling hook cable
for Origin Jazz. I've always loved toys with grappling hooks and I thought
it was a bummer that Jazz has one but with no string or cable for it - so I
made my own!

Thinking about threading a wire through the center of it so it'll hold a
pose better, but overall I'm pretty pleased with it.

Biological Chronicle Status Update

Hi everyone! It’s been a while, huh?

As you can probably tell, the additional formats (ebooks, print) have been
taking me longer than expected. This is both because of some technical
hurdles I’ve encountered, as well as just not having a lot of time to work
on the project.

Additionally, those formats are actually going to have to be put on hold
for the time being, in lieu of another update. I recently discovered a
better method of ripping the digital releases of the Papercutz Bionicle
graphic novels, resulting in noticably better-looking copies of a lot of
the comic pages used in Biological Chronicle. I plan to replace the
existing digital comic rips with these new ones, in order to provide the
best quality possible – but unfortunately, that isn’t as simple as just
swapping out all those images. As you may already know, I had to make a
large number of minor edits to various comic pages, to fix errors, remove
extra text, and so on. Since these new rips are straight from the Papercutz
graphic novels, all of those edits will have to be re-done before the new
rips can be added to BC.

I do still absolutely intend to release all promised formats, but this step
will have to come first. If you’d like to see these updates release faster,
and you have image editing experience, I’m very open to others coming in to
help get this task completed. Biological Chronicle is largely a one-woman
operation, and so it takes quite some time to get all these things
completed. If you’re interested in helping out, feel free to contact me at
wynn@crosswiredgeeks.com.

One other thing: as some of you are likely aware, Twitter (the place where
I tend to post smaller snippets about work/updates on Biological Chronicle
and CWG as a whole) is looking like it may soon become a less viable
platform for me to use. As such, I’m going to try to utilize the blog here
more, posting in-progress info and status updates, rather than just a big
post whenever a BC update is released. So if you want to stay on top of
everything going on with the project, please consider subscribing to this
blog!

I think that’s everything for now. Thanks so much to everyone that
continues to follow and support my little project. I hope to have more
updates to share with you soon.

Happy International 810NICLE Day! First round of AZW3s is live!

Hi, everyone! While most of the community celebrates 810NICLE Day on August
10th (using the American date format for 8/10), today marks “International
810NICLE Day,” or 8/10 using the date format preferred by a number of other
countries. But additionally, today is the 4th anniversary of Biological
Chronicle – yes, by pure coincidence, the date I originally posted this
project online was October 8th, back in 2017:

I’ll be honest – I was originally hoping to have all the ebook formats
finished for today (maybe even the print format version), to wrap up the
final piece of this project on the 4th anniversary. But I ran into a couple
of hiccups along the way that slowed the process down – not to mention
things like shopping for a house occupying my time.

That said, I’ve not come empty-handed! I’ve finished the AZW3s (i.e. Kindle
format) of the Standard versions of each Book, with no media links. You can
download a ZIP of them here, or download them individually or bundled on
the Biological Chronicle hub page.

I’m sharing these now, both to mark this special date, but also to give you
all the chance to start providing feedback on them now, in case I’ve messed
something up in the conversion somewhere and missed it. Any issues caught
now are less work for me later, so please let me know if you find an issue
in any of these! They all work correctly on my Kindle Oasis (other than
some of the images being a little slow to load), but that’s the only device
I’ve been able to test them on.

EPUB and MOBI formats are still on the way for all versions, as well as
AZW3s for the rest of the versions (other than those with media links –
it’s looking like there may not be an elegant way for me to incorporate
those into any of the ebook formats, though I’ll keep trying). The print
format will come after all these are done.

Thanks to everyone that has and continues to support this project. I’m
happy to finally be getting these other formats done, and hope some of you
out there are looking forward to the rest of them!

Character Guides Now Live on Web

If you’ve seen the big Biological Chronicle update that was posted on
810NICLE Day, you’ll know that it now has visual character guides
throughout the PDFs of all 10 Books. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get
them finished for the web version in time for August 10th, but as of right
now, they are live on the website, and are also included in each Book’s
table of contents!

   -
   -
   -
   -
   -
   -
   -
   -
   -

And for those wondering: work on the alternate formats continues! The new
character guide images created for the web version will also be used for
the ebook formats, so completing them was also part of the process of
creating those new download formats.

Biological Chronicle – 810NICLE Day Update and Book Title Poll Results!

Happy 810NICLE Day, everyone! To celebrate our little community holiday,
Biological Chronicle has received a big update, including the new Book
titles that you all voted for! For details, keep reading, or watch our
announcement video from the 810NICLE Day stream:

   1. Over 100 small fixes have been made! These are things like image edit
fixes, typo fixes, etc. Check out the changelog linked on the Biological
   Chronicle landing page for details!
   2. Some chapters in Books 8 and 9 have been rearranged slightly to
improve the reading experience and flow.
   3. The “Complete” version of Biological Chronicle have been rebranded to
“with Optional Extras,” to make it clear that the Standard versions have
everything “necessary,” and the larger versions simply have optional extra
   content.
   4. Better, more accurate credits:
      1. The document author listed on all Biological Chronicle PDF files
has been updated from Wynn Martin to “Greg Farshtey, et al.”
      2. The Biological Chronicle credits pages are now specific to each
Book, rather than being the same across all 10.
   5. A few comic pages have been added – these are pages which you could
completely follow the story without, but that add some more weight to
   significant moments.
   6. All manually-scanned items in Biological Chronicle (e.g. comics,
Young Reader books) have been re-scanned at much higher quality
      1. Some comic pages (specifically those from Glatorian issue #3) have
been edited to provide larger, higher-quality pages – thanks to Chip
Wiseman for her help with that!
   7. In the PDFs, the aspect ratio of all image-only pages has been
changed to match that of the image on the page – so there are no longer
white bars at the sides or top of images on these pages, and two-page
images are now actually two pages wide!
   8. Where possible, extraneous comic text (e.g. titles, cross-sells) has
been completely removed, showing the art behind the text (previously this
text was either left in, or in the case of text boxes, blacked out)
   9. All images in Biological Chronicle now have manually written
alt-text, which can be seen if you hover over an image in the PDFs. This
text will allow those that use a screen-reader to experience what is
happening on visual pages. (Note: this is not yet fully implemented in the
web version, and the web version will not support hovering to see it)
   10. Two of the Le-Koro MNOG cutscenes linked in Book 1 have been updated
to the versions where Taipu is present (to be consistent with the text
version of the cutscene events included in Book 1).
   11. Links (which can be clicked, tapped, or scanned) to clips from the
Bionicle moves have been added to Books 3, 4, 5, and 9, with the text they
correspond to highlighted. Links to Metus’ Revenge and a condensed version
of the Mata Nui Saga have also been added.
   12. There are now Character Guides in all Books – these show the
official renders of all set characters, with names, so that readers
unfamiliar with the sets can have a visual for them. These are placed in
specific locations throughout the Books chosen to ensure nothing is spoiled
while reading for the first time. (Note: these are not yet fully
   implemented in the web version)
   13. The Book titles have been updated based on your votes! Thanks so
much to everyone that voted. The final titles are:
      1. Book 1: The Coming of the Toa
      2. Book 2: What Lurks Below
      3. Book 3: The Mask of Light
      4. Book 4: City of Legends
      5. Book 5: Web of Shadows
      6. Book 6: Island of Doom
      7. Book 7: Sea of Darkness
      8. Book 8: Ignition
      9. Book 9: Journey’s End
   14. Biological Chronicle now has front and rear book covers! Thanks so
much to Dusty S for designing the front covers, and providing me with
the psd file in order to update the titles for them.

Now, with all that out of the way, something a little less exciting: This
is the final content update for Biological Chronicle. If you find a typo or
error somewhere, still let me know and I’ll see about getting it fixed, but
in terms of the content present in this compilation, and the arrangement of
it – this is it. This is the final state of Biological Chronicle, and how
it will remain from here on.

Now, the exciting part of that: with no more major changes coming, I can
finally do what I’ve been promising some of you for several years now –
more formats! As you read this I am hard at work on converting Biological
Chronicle into other formats, including ebooks formats, and a print format
version (for those of you who’d like to go to a printing press and get a
physical copy of this thing).

In all honesty, when I first posted this project online, I had no idea that
I would still be working on it almost 4 years later. But the reason I have
been is because of all the feedback I’ve received from you all, and it’s
helped me make this thing bigger and better than I ever could have imagined.

Thanks so much for all your support, and look forward to the alternate
versions coming (hopefully) soon!

New MOC: Toa Helryx

*Her armor pitted and scarred from a thousand battles, Toa Helryx leads the
Order of Mata Nui in the war against the Brotherhood of Makuta.*

I built this for TTV’s contest to determine the canon appearance of Toa
Helryx. She was described by Greg as having pitted and scarred armor and a
frail appearance due to all that she’s been through. I decided to portray
this by having her armor clearly worn and aged, with asymmetry where pieces
are missing or have been replaced – the color texture of some Knights
Kingdom armor pieces, in particular, I found helped to sell this effect.

For her “original” colors (the colors of those pieces not as aged and
rusted), I took inspiration from Gali Mata’s color layout, since the Toa
Mata were among some of the earliest Toa created, and Helryx was
essentially a Toa prototype. But I added a twist by mixing metallic blue in
with the light blue, adding more of a sheen to Helryx’s armor while still
keeping the recognizable layout of medium blue and lighter blues (though
with a splash of the lighter metallic blue on the torso).

I also took some inspiration from the Toa Mata for the build itself – the
two-fingered hands, the black ball joint in the chest, the Mata feet, the
general shape of the torso were all done to emulate (but not copy) the
general Mata design (again, envisioning Helryx as a sort of prototype for
the Mata). I even threw in a gear on her back for good measure!

And finally, the weapons: we know that Helryx carried a mace and a shield.
I aimed to create a mace design somewhere between the recognizable “spiked
ball” design, and something more like this traditional medieval mace:

I also didn’t want the mace head to be absurdly large – intimidating, but
not something that looks like it would tip her over! The design I settled
on is simple, but I think it looks like an effective weapon/tool, and at a
reasonable size for Helryx to carry. Oh, I also used axle connectors along
the handle to add a sense of texture to it!

The shield was a little tricky – I didn’t want something enormous, but I
also didn’t really want just a little buckler. I built it to have a
recognizable medieval shield shape, but with some spiked details (to
accompany the style of the mace and some of her armor).

Oh right, almost forgot to mention the mask! Helryx’s mask has no canon
depiction (yet), and the mask of the winning MOC will be disregarded in her
official appearance, so I decided to simply give her the Hau, since it’s
the symbol of Mata Nui, the being she is sworn to act in service of.

Before I go, here are a few simple breakdown pics to illustrate how the
more complex parts were built:

…and that’s it! Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments – and of
course, don’t forget to vote in the contest!
